Watauga County Farmers' Market

Saturday Morning November 19

The Watauga County Farmers' Market will be having it's fifth annual holiday markets on November 19th and 26th from 9 - 1 in the Horn in the West parking lot. There will be fall vegetables and fruits as well as unique local gift ideas. Gamekeeper chef Sam Easley will be there this weekend to prepare fresh hot treats and recipe ideas for shoppers. The weather this Saturday is predicted to be mild and we expect to have a very enjoyable day for all.

Zydeco Moon Organic Farm will have lettuce mix, mixed mustard greens, kale, braising greens, beets, beautiful sweet purple bok choy, and cauliflower and some broccoli. Additionally you will find certified organic satsumas from Louisiana on November 19, and certified grapefruits, oranges, kumquats and meyer lemons from Louisiana on the following week. Alan Souther will have plenty of beef and turnips.

Rebecca Kaenzig will be offering Christmas cookies, caramel cake and fruitcake along with coffee, hot chocolate and hot cider. There will be great holiday bread puddings from Lulu's Sweet & Savory Bread Puddings including sweet potato with pecan praline sauce, chocolate, coconut, maple, pecan with maple sauce and a savory spinach/artichoke/parmesan bread pudding.

Owl Creek Breadworks will be at the holiday market with a full load of European-style hearth breads, including breads from France, Poland, and Germany. Also available will be sourdough hardrolls, whole wheat sourdough sticky buns, sourdough croissants, pain au chocolat, savory chop blocks, pumpkin-apple bread and muffins and an assortment of bagels, including seasonal pumpkin bagels. Don't forget to stock up on cranberry granola. Gift certificates available for purchase as well and you can place orders for holiday treats for delivery in December.

Kingfishercrafts will have plenty of new farm fresh photography featuring photogenic fare from the 2011 Watauga Farmers Market season. Also they will have many newly designed jewelry pieces from an exotic stock of stones and pendants plus a huge selection of colorful earrings perfect for stuffing those holiday stockings. Caron Baker will offer lots of 6-10" decorated Christmas trees. That's right, 6-10 inch pottery trees. There will also be 2012 angel ornaments and tons of other cool pottery that make great gifts. Susan Graham will be bringing handmade felted wool hats and mittens perfect for keeping warm in the cold days of winter.

It seems likely that the market will remain at the Horn in the West for the 2012 season. Thanks to everyone who worked to make this possible. Turn next to First Citizens Bank on Highway 105 Extension and go to the top of the hill. Call WCFM manager Karen Bauman at 1-828-355-4918 or visit our website at http://wcfm.info for more information. We will be there rain or shine!

Watauga County Agricultural Conference Center

Meetings and functions of the Watauga County Farmers' Market are often held at the Watauga County Agricultural Conference Center. The map to the Watauga County Agricultural Conference Center may be of help. This indicates the actual entrance to the Conference Center off Poplar Grove Road, not the main entrance to the Cooperative Extension Office on King Street.
