Watauga County Farmers' Market will accept food donations on Saturdays for food insecure individuals and families. The Society of St. Andrews will be collecting and distributing the donations to local help organizations. Our farmers have been donating surplus produce for quite some time, and we would like to offer you the opportunity to help as well. You may also donate any extras you may have from your own garden. A cooler will be placed at the manager's stand for any donations.

Plenty of Apples

The folks at Watauga County Farmers' Market are going strong with the Wednesday and Saturday markets, and are also getting excited about the holiday market on the Saturdays before and after Thanksgiving. You can look forward to some great local items including fresh home holiday decorations.

This Saturday Springhouse Farm will have shiitake mushrooms, pumpkins for cooking or decoration, arugula, Romas, green beans, tatsoi, kale, yellow squash, zucchini, patty pan squash, tomatillos, and green peppers.

On Saturday Susan Wright of Shady Grove Gardens & Nursery will have a colorful mix of Sungold, Black Cherry and Sweet Million Cherry tomatoes, plus preserved hydrangeas. Zydeco Moon Organic Farm and Cabins will have green lettuce, a purple baby romaine, lettuce mix, spicy arugula, heirloom tomatoes, delicata, butternut and acorn squash and broccoli.

Goldenrod Gardens will have lots of beautiful lettuce to choose from such as Black Seeded Simpson, Mixed Baby Leaf and some mini heads. Moon and Stars Watermelon and small French Melons are still available. Pretty little Swallow Eggplant are tender and yummy. Mini bell peppers make a great appetizer when stuffed with herbs and local goat cheese. Pimiento Peppers are in abundance, roast some for pimiento cheese or blend into hummus or a creamy soup. Check out the newest autumn wreaths as well. Sunshine Cove Farm will have microgreens, tomatoes, kale and chard.

Faith Mountain Farm offers three whole grain breads from fresh ground wheat berries: five seed, seven grain, and buttermilk oat. Summer mix honey, sunflowers, shiitake mushrooms, winter squash, and lots of other baked goods will also make the trip to the market.

J and Lindy of Appalachian Native Plants, INC will have Rabbiteye blueberry plants in 2 gallon pots as well as native azaleas and Rhododendron in 3 gallon and quart containers.

Our village Blacksmith, Tom Wooten of Fiddler Forge, will have elegant hand-forged Hanging Planters and Birdfeeders. The unique designs are created using solid steel & bronze, forged in fire, with utmost attention to detail. He offers a variety of both ornate & functional styles & sizes, as well as a choice of wall or ceiling mount brackets to hang them from. Check out his cabin tables too.

The Wednesday markets will be held on Wednesday afternoons until the end of September. The hours have been moved up to 3 - 6 PM. The market is having great success on EBT acceptance, you can call 1-828-355-4918 for more information on using EBT at the market.

Find us at the Horn in the West in Boone, turn next to First Citizens Bank on Highway 105 Extension and go to the top of the hill. Call WCFM manager Karen Bauman at 1-828-355-4918 for more information. We will be there rain or shine!
